Visual Anomalies Completed
Right now all I have to do is make DVD copies and I'm set.in the past week or so I have been talking with mason paul about my work and using stills from my website. in the past couple days I have been in corespondence with laura who is doing PR for this exhibition. to understand what I do she asked me the following questions.
What does your process involve?
The process is usually called The "Set up" meaning compiling images onto several tapes, about 5 tapes which basically could be 5-6 hours of footage altogether i take two tapes and mix them together onto another tape. This peticular tape remains a proto type of what the exhibit could look like but I still consider to be in raw form. From there I create slight variations to more variations this process can take weeks or even months but the final mix down can be very rewarding. Sometimes i'm actually listening to the music I am using for the exhibit, which helps to facillitate a rythm
Do you envision what you want and then seek out existing footage or do you first see all the elements independent of one another and decide how they would work in combination?
i feel now i can envision what I want and usually does turn out the way I want it go. A couple of years ago things seemed to happen by "happy accidents" now I know what happens when an image is juxtaposed onto another image. since my primary goal is to be environmental or atmospheric. I tend to use music that is elecetronic or ambient. The reason why? is to keep interpretations open at all times. Since this is not a short film, or a screen saver
When filming yes I have to see things independant of each other. For example my last project I filmed Fish at the newport aquarium. I got lots of stuff. I thought man I'm going use everything because I was having lots of fun, I really thought most of the footage will be heavily used. but to my surprise when making final decisions when mixing footage of performance artists. I came to the conclusion that it would look very tongue in cheek. But instead I used most shots of swirling bubbles behind multi colored light fixtures. i felt more comfortable with it.
How much do you shoot yourself?
despite using some public domain films, I film everything myself. earlier I was worried about using other sources until a friend told me that lots of people use other sources
How do you go about providing a context for the images so that they can “find meaning within themselves?” I realize you try to avoid getting bogged down by meaning, but what inspires you to choose the various images that you choose?
i hope most people when veiwing my work do find meaning in my work and yes, also I hope they actually get what I was trying to achieve. One piece in peticular entitled Water. I just filmed water in a swimming pool. with my legs gently making waves. I only wanted to convey what water does to me whenever I just sit and watch the ripples and waves. in the present sense I try not to be so obvious. And yes I have purposely picked images both on a concious and subconcious level. i think everyone does to a certain extent. I take from my interests on subjects that are Futuristic, mystical, and sexual. But I still manage to be down to earth. another theme i find myself exploring. And that is, what is Beauty? and what is not? this is a slight hidden agenda when using the word Anomaly in the titled.
